The Churn Community Hub was proud to celebrate volunteer Jake Tombs at the Cirencester Community Awards, organised by Cirencester Radio and Cirencester Community Development Trust, held at Cirencester Baptist Church on Monday 27 April.
Jake, one of The Churn’s Good Neighbour Befrienders, was recognised for his exceptional commitment to the organisation’s Befriending Service and his long-term support for a local resident.
He began volunteering in 2021, aged 18, as part of his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, committing to an 18-month placement. During this time, he was matched with Derek, who was in his early nineties, and began visiting him every Thursday.
Over time, these weekly visits grew into a genuine friendship built on trust, companionship and mutual respect. Even after completing the volunteering requirement for his award, Jake chose to continue visiting Derek, maintaining the friendship for five years – far beyond what was originally expected.
Their time together was spent sharing stories and experiences, from Derek’s memories of National Service to his passion for cricket, as well as enjoying simple moments over a cup of tea. Through his consistent support, Jake helped reduce social isolation and enabled Derek to remain living independently at home for longer. Following Derek’s passing in January 2026, Jake has continued to keep in touch with his family, reflecting the lasting impact of their connection.
Alongside his volunteering, Jake actively promotes opportunities within his workplace and the wider Cirencester community, encouraging others to join the befriending programme and support local residents experiencing loneliness.
The Churn Community Hub praised Jake’s dedication, describing him as a powerful example of the difference that consistent volunteering and community connection can make to people’s lives.
Katherine Crawshaw, Volunteer Coordinator, at The Churn Community Hub, said:
“Jake’s commitment has been truly exceptional. What began as a short-term volunteering placement grew into a meaningful friendship that made a real difference to Derek’s life. This is exactly what our befriending service is about – building genuine connections that reduce loneliness and bring people together across generations.”
