It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Robert Towill, former Treasurer, Company Secretary and Trustee of The Churn Community Hub.
Robert joined the Board of Trustees in 2017, bringing with him a wealth of professional expertise and experience. During his eight years as Treasurer and Company Secretary, The Churn experienced significant growth. When Robert joined the Board, the charity’s annual income was just under £200,000. By the time he stepped down in 2025, it had grown to more than half a million pounds.
These figures tell an important story about how The Churn Community Hub has developed in response to growing need within our community. But behind those numbers lies something even more important: Robert’s steady guidance and unwavering commitment.
Robert played a vital role in helping The Churn navigate both challenging times and periods of significant expansion, ensuring that we grew while remaining true to our purpose.
While his professional skills were invaluable, it is Robert the man that so many of us remember most fondly. Colleagues and fellow trustees consistently describe Robert as kind, patient and conscientious.
As Sarah Bourne, Chief Executive Officer (pictured with Robert) reflected:
“Robert brought immense professional expertise to The Churn, but it is his gentleness and integrity that we will remember most. He was no pushover and held clear views, but he always expressed them with courtesy and consideration. Robert’s quiet determination and wisdom helped shape The Churn into the organisation it is today, and we are enormously grateful for everything he gave to our charity and community.”
Robert was deeply appreciative of The Churn team, supportive of staff and volunteers, and always willing to help wherever he could. From stewarding car parks at events, to joining charity quizzes and being a Churn Good Neighbour befriender, he was an integral part of our organisation.
When Robert stepped down as a trustee in 2025, he left behind a stronger organisation than the one he had joined. His legacy lives on in the charity he helped shape.
Everyone at The Churn Community Hub extends their deepest sympathies to Robert’s family and friends. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
